For the
first time in several years, Relay for Life officials at Utah State University
have selected several freshmen to join the leadership committee. The students will
help plan and execute this years relay that will be held Friday at 6:30 p.m. in
the Nelson Fieldhouse.
Steve
Wilcox, relay president, said the freshmen selected this year will “bring a new
spirit and excitement to the job.”
“Receiving
the opportunity to get involved is the best way to figure out who you are and
the potential you have to become someone great," said Timmie Bowie, cancer
survivor and chosen freshman leader. "It is also an awesome way to meet
new people and make friendships that will last a lifetime.”
Freshman leaders
will be in charge of recruitment, donations, and organizing a special dinner
for participating cancer survivors. They will also help other committee members
plan outside entertainment throughout the event to keep a fun atmosphere.
“As a freshman
committee member I can see how the whole organization works,” Bowie said.
"I plan on being on the committee every year until I graduate. It is very
helpful to be able to watch such amazing leaders.”
Bowie hopes
to follow in past leaders' footsteps in order to help the relay grow better
each year.
“I
encourage freshmen to create the desire to be involved in future relays,” Bowie
said. "Participating in this event has made my entire college career and
is what I love most about college.”
"We all
know someone who has fought the hard battle, and we might even know someone who
has lost such a battle," said Baylee Brian, a freshman committee member. "It's
really humbling to know I’m a part of something that's making a difference in
the fight."
Brian
encourages all freshmen that are looking for involvement and leadership
opportunities to support the event so they can be involved in the coming years
as future leaders.
